Follow in the footsteps of Explorers and Patriots
while enjoying some of North Carolina’s
most scenic and challenging roads
Join automotive enthusiasts from all over the Southeast in touring the North Carolina mountains and foothills on October 1, 2011. This event is sponsored by the Exploring Joara Foundation, a nonprofit organization that supports public archaeology in the Catawba and Yadkin river valleys. There will be five stops on the tour where participants can check-in and pick up poker cards beginning at 8:30 am. The tour will begin in Marion and will end at the Catawba Meadows Park in Morganton. Touring Joara badges and poker hand prizes will be awarded at Catawba Meadows from 3:30 until 4:30 pm.
This touring event will take participants on some of the most scenic and historic roads in western North Carolina. The tour will follow the footsteps of Pioneers and Patriots as participants follow sections of the Overmountain Victory National Trail. This trail is the route the Overmountain Men followed as they marched towards the Battle of Kings Mountain. In this pivotal battle, patriot backwoodsmen defeated a well-trained force of loyalists in an event Thomas Jefferson called the turning point in the War of Independence. On the tour you will visit Quaker Meadows, patriot leader Colonel Charles McDowell’s home, where the Overmountain Men camped the night of September 30, 1780. Step back into the 18th century with living history exhibits and tours of the historic McDowell House during the annual Revolutionary War Week events. At the Joara stop, travel further back in time to the 16th century. Joara is the Native American village where Spanish Captain Juan Pardo built Fort San Juan in 1567. A highlight of the tour will be ascending Hwy 226 A, “The Diamondback,” one of North Carolina’s most challenging roads.
More tour details, such as accommodations, tour map, directions, and points of interests, will be provided upon registration. Registration will also include a Touring Joara badge and a list of driving and traveling tips to prepare you for North Carolina mountain roads. Most of these items will be available at the tour check-in. Driver tour fees are provided on the registration form below.
